History
Like many towns in the South, Mebane was settled because of its proximity to the path that settlers were taking while expanding the country. The town’s post office was named after Alexander Mebane, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the U.S. Congress. Mebane was incorporated under the name “Mebanesville” in 1881, and transitioned to its current name in 1883. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1987.
