Located approximately 33 miles southwest of Chapel Hill and 33 miles southeast of Greensboro, Siler City is positioned within reasonable distance of big city attractions. However, this quaint town enjoys laid-back living, natural beauty, and the well-connected community it has worked so hard to build. Due to its rural landscape, farming is a prominent industry in Siler City and its surrounding land. Residents may purchase farm-fresh produce and other goods at the Siler City Farmers’ Market every Saturday throughout the summer.

The town maintains five parks, two gymnasiums, a community center and a swimming pool. Siler City is an acclaimed arts community, evident in the North Carolina Arts Incubator, a non-profit organization in town housing working studios, shops and a gallery. Siler City also hosts the Third Friday Artwalk, an art-focused event, and has a number of breathtaking wall murals scattered throughout the downtown area. Other community events include the Milo Holt Western Film Festival, Halloween Hoopla, and the Christmas Parade.

The Siler City Commercial Historic District contains 45 buildings, some of which date as far back as the 1890s. This national historic district hosts a variety of shops, restaurants and other small businesses.

Chatham County Schools serves Siler City, which hosts three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. In Chatham County, there are four private schools, including Auldern Academy in Siler City. The town does not host any institutions of higher learning within its boundaries, but maintains a reasonable distance from a number of colleges and universities in Greensboro, Chapel Hill and other nearby cities.

History

The Siler family from Germany first settled in the area now known as Siler City around the year of 1750. Shortly after, other settlers arrived and established plantations, churches and businesses. By 1870, a descendant of the Siler family operated a small grist mill in town. The railroad arrived to town in 1884 and was named Siler Station. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.

Siler City was the retirement community and burial location of actress Frances Bavier, known for her role as Aunt Bea on the Andy Griffith Show, a 1960s television sitcom set in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina. Siler City was also featured on an episode of the show in 1964.
