Lifestyle and Attractions

With a population of about 10,000, Elon is a small town situated in central North Carolina. The town lives out its motto, “Heritage. Character. Progress.” Located just outside Burlington, Elon is nationally known as the home of Elon University, a private institution that has received a number of accolades over the years. The town is tightly intertwined with the university, as residents attend performances, concerts, sports games, and other events on campus. In fact, the town’s 4.5-square-mile area was initially named Elon College, until the college changed to Elon University and the town became Elon. Residents enjoy performances at Elon University’s Center for the Arts, a 75,000-square-foot facility with three popular venues, including the McCrary Theatre, a large-scale theatre and concert hall; The Black Box Theatre, an intimate stage for theater productions; and Yeager Recital Hall, a contemporary venue for concerts.

The nationally recognized Elon College Historic District hosts six buildings and a monument, dating back to the early 20th century. Residents of Elon also visit campus to watch the Elon Phoenix, the university’s NCAA Division I sports teams. Elon has a number of parks for outdoor recreation, including Beth Schmidt Park and Lawrence Slade Park. Major employers in Elon include Elon University and Engineered Controls International, a manufacturer for gas welding industry equipment. Like many communities in this region, Elon was initially established because of its proximity to the railroad track. The town was located at the crossroads of the track running between Goldsboro and Charlotte, and the area became known as “Mill Point” because it was a shipping point for local cotton mills.

The town saw some growth thereafter, and a post office was built in 1888, establishing the area even more. The following year, the local Christian assembly made plans to open an institution for higher learning. At the time, the area was heavily wooded with oak trees, so they chose the name “Elon,” the Hebrew name for oak. In 1890, the college opened its doors.

The town of Mill Point slowly began to grow, adding stables and a blacksmith, and the town was incorporated under the name Elon College in 1893. More than 100 years later, in 2001, the school changed its name to Elon University and the town became simply “Elon.”
