It is considered one of the more progressive communities in the South, and is widely known for its exceptional artistic culture and focus on farm-fresh food. In fact, the Carrboro Farmers’ Market is one of the town’s most popular attractions and one of the finest local markets in the country. The market opened in 1977, and features produce, homemade goods and crafts produced within a 50-mile radius of Carrboro. The town is home to two iconic music venues hosting national and regional acts, including the Carrboro ArtsCenter and the Cat’s Cradle.

History

Carrboro was originally named West End because of its location west of Chapel Hill, but was later renamed Carrboro after North Carolina industrialist, Julian Shakespeare Carr. Carrboro was settled in 1882 around the State University Railroad in Glenn, North Carolina. The local merchants argued that the railroad station should be placed at least two miles outside of town to prevent students from leaving town on the weekends and therefore spending money elsewhere.

Settlement increased in the area after Thomas F. Lloyd of Chapel Hill constructed a steam-powered grist mill near the depot, which later became Alberta Cotton Mill. In addition to the name of West End, Carrboro was also temporarily called Lloydville, Venable, and then finally its current name shortly after its incorporation in 1911.
