Knightdale has become a part of the metropolitan region and a suburb of Raleigh, bordering the city at the Neuse River. I-540 and I-87 intersect in Knightdale, making the town more accessible for residents and visitors. This easy-going but thriving community takes advantage of convenient access to the nearby capital city and others in the Research Triangle area.

 

Knightdale residents enjoy a myriad of options for outdoor recreation. The Knightdale Recreation Center is part of a 169-acre tract that includes a community park. Knightdale Environmental Education Park features a walking trail, picnic shelters, two observation outlooks, and more. The 76-acre Knightdale Station Park hosts an amphitheater, paved trails, the town’s first dog park, athletic fields, a playground, an arboretum, and more. The park also hosts the community farmers’ market through the spring and summer. Knightdale hosts a number of satellite locations of regional hospitals, including Duke, WakeMed, and Rex Healthcare. Knightdale’s Shoppes at Midway Plantation include major retailers and specialty shops.

 

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Knightdale is home to five schools in the Wake County Public School System, including Knightdale Elementary School, Lockhart Elementary School, Hodge Road Elementary School, Forestville Road Elementary School, and Knightdale High School. While there are no institutions of higher learning in Knightdale, residents may access a variety of nearby colleges and universities in Raleigh. Nearby institutions include North Carolina State University, Meredith College, Shaw University, Saint Augustine’s College, and Wake Technical Community College.

 

History

The area now known as Knightdale was originally inhabited by the Tuscarora Indians. The town was then home to Englishman John Hinton, who was sent by the King of England to settle the land. For the next half century, Knightdale remained a quaint town, and was completely devastated during the Civil War. After 1865, Raleigh experienced a rapid growth in population, and Wake County redrew the county map, dividing the area into townships. The area that is now Knightdale was originally included in St. Matthew’s Township and was considered a small crossroads for several years.

 

At the end of the 19th century, local citizens felt the need to make the community into a chartered town. Henry Haywood Knight donated some of his land holdings, hoping that Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company would build a railroad through the area — which eventually happened, and Knightdale was incorporated in 1927. Activity in the town began to increase after the establishment of the railroad. Trains were able to transport timber and farm products in and out of town, and many families began to move to the area.
