Monroe is a rapidly growing town with scenic rural surroundings, a quaint downtown area and tight-knit community. Its proximity to Charlotte has made this a desirable area to call home for those pursuing small-town life near big-city amenities.
Real Estate
Monroe is an affordable place to live, with a lower cost of living than that of both the state and nation. The median home price is comparable to that of North Carolina and less than the national average. Home prices are consistently appreciating, which means this is a good time to invest in Monroe real estate. Homes in Monroe include a variety of rural properties situated on beautiful farmland and historic homes placed side by side on tree-lined streets. The small-town feel and friendly neighborhoods in Monroe are especially attractive qualities for buyers.
Lifestyle and Attractions
Small-town living, an old-fashioned downtown and beautiful rural surroundings draw residents and visitors alike to the town of Monroe. Monroe is a rapidly growing city, as the population jumped from approximately 26,000 to 33,000 between the years of 2000 and 2010. It serves as the county seat of Union County, and is located about 25 miles southeast from the center of Charlotte. It is easily accessible from surrounding areas, including the coastline, as US 74 runs through Monroe. The town’s quaint tree-lined historic downtown is a community gathering place for shopping, dining, free outdoor concerts, and holiday happenings, such as the Halloween Festival and the Christmas Tree Lighting.
Beautiful rural landscape surrounds Monroe, providing plenty of hiking trails, fishing spots and horseback riding land. In fact, Union County is home to more horses than any other county in the state. Monroe is surrounded by rich farmland, and residents may purchase local produce from farmers at the Union County Farmers’ Market several days throughout the week. The local Aw Shucks Farm boasts year-round fun with hayrides, nature trails, fishing, animals, a corn maze, a pumpkin patch and more. Treehouse Vineyards is a family-owned vineyard and winery with tree houses for rent.
The average commute time to the city is 45 minutes, but many Monroe residents don’t have to travel to Charlotte for employment. The county boasts the state’s highest concentration of aerospace companies, with 19 companies located within a seven-mile radius. Other major industries include agriculture, especially soybeans, corn and chickens, and many residents work at the Carolinas Medical Center Union Hospital.
Nearby Schools and Higher Education
Monroe has 21 public schools in the Union County Public Schools system, and there are four private, faith-based schools located in Monroe. Monroe is home to South Piedmont Community College, and residents may access a variety of nearby colleges and universities, including Wingate University, Johnson & Wales University, Davidson College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and more.
History
The North Carolina General Assembly formed in 1842 and ordered that the county seat would be located within two miles of the center of the county. The town of Monroe was named for President James Monroe and incorporated in 1844. The completion of the Carolina Central Railway connecting Wilmington and Charlotte played a major role in the growth of Monroe in the late 1800s. Monroe eventually became a market and trading town, as it was a hub for traveling salesmen and railway men.
During World War II, a military base, Camp Sutton, was established in town, serving as an Army training camp and German prisoner of war camp from 1944 to 1946. Many historic buildings from Monroe’s past still stand to this day, including buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, most notably the old Victorian courthouse, which was built in 1886 and sits in the central square downtown.
